Voice agent or chatbot: which one does your website need?

Both answer questions. They suit different customers and different moments. Here's how to choose.

Chatbots have been on websites for years. Voice agents are newer: the visitor presses a button and simply talks. They solve overlapping problems, but they aren't interchangeable.

When voice works better

  • Your customers would normally call you. Clinics, trades, hotels and local services get phone questions. Voice meets people in the habit they already have.
  • Questions need a bit of back and forth. Booking a visit or describing a problem is quicker to say than to type.
  • Visitors are on their phones. Talking is easier than typing on a small screen, especially on the move.
  • Accessibility matters to you. Voice helps visitors who find typing hard.

When text works better

  • Visitors need to copy something, like an order number or a link.
  • People browse in quiet places, like an office or public transport.
  • Answers are long lists or tables that are easier to read than to hear.

The honest answer

If most of your customers pick up the phone before they buy, a voice agent is the closer match to how they already behave. Try it on your site for a few weeks and read the conversations. They'll tell you quickly whether your visitors like talking.
