How to add a voice assistant to your WordPress site in 10 minutes
A step-by-step guide to putting an AI voice assistant on any WordPress site, with or without editing your theme.
Adding an AI voice assistant to WordPress doesn't need a developer. If you can install a plugin, you can do it in about ten minutes. Visitors then get a button on every page: they press it, ask a question out loud, and your assistant answers.
Before you start
- An AI voice agent in VeyCall, published, with a little knowledge added (your FAQ is enough to begin).
- Admin access to your WordPress site.
- Your site served over HTTPS. Browsers only allow microphone access on secure pages, and most hosts include a free certificate.
Step 1: copy your snippet
In VeyCall, open your agent and go to Add to website. Copy the snippet. It's a single line that looks like this:
<script src="https://app.veycall.com/widget.js"
data-agent-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID" async></script>On the same page, add your site under Allowed websites. Add both forms if your site uses them, for example example.com and www.example.com. This stops anyone from using your agent on another website.
Step 2: paste it into WordPress
Option A: with a plugin (recommended)
A header-and-footer plugin keeps the snippet safe when you change or update your theme. WPCode is a popular free one:
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New, search for “WPCode”, then install and activate it.
- Open Code Snippets → Header & Footer.
- Paste your snippet into the Footer box and click Save Changes.
Option B: in your theme
If you use a child theme and are comfortable editing files, paste the snippet just before </body> in its footer.php. Avoid editing a parent theme directly: the next theme update will erase your change.
Step 3: check it works
- If you use a caching plugin or a CDN, clear its cache.
- Open your site in a private window, so you see what visitors see. The voice button appears in the bottom corner.
- Press it, allow the microphone, and ask a question your customers often ask.
If the button doesn't appear
- Cache. Clear your caching plugin, your host's cache and your CDN, then reload.
- Allowed websites. The address in your browser must match an allowed website exactly. A missing
www.is the most common cause. - Script optimization. Some performance plugins delay or combine scripts. Exclude
widget.jsfrom those settings. - Agent not published. Drafts don't load on websites. Publish the agent in VeyCall.
Make it match your brand
Back on the Add to website page, set the widget color, a greeting and an avatar. Changes apply to your site without touching WordPress again.
Next steps
The assistant is only as good as what it knows. Read what to put in your knowledge base, then check your Conversations after a few days to see what visitors ask. The same snippet works on Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and plain HTML sites: see the documentation for details.
